October is Safety Month

Wow, October is a busy month for safety! This month celebrates the 100th anniversary of Fire Prevention Week™ and it’s Cybersecurity Awareness Month, too! This year’s National Fire Protection Association campaign is “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape.™” That’s a good reminder for me to check my apartment building’s fire escape routes and make sure my neighbors do, too!

For Moving & Storage operators, have detailed escape plans for each of your buildings that are clearly posted and reviewed regularly with your employees.

For drivers, if a fire breaks out in your truck, remove yourself from the danger immediately. If safe to do so, move the truck into an open area, away from buildings, trees, vehicles, or anything else that may catch fire. Then call 911 to report the fire and your location. Here are some additional tips for different scenarios:

  • If the fire is in the engine compartment, turn off the engine immediately.
  • Disconnect the trailer from the truck if you can do so safely.
  • Use a fire extinguisher on the source of the fire. Use the PASS method: Pull the pin, Aim at the base of the fire, Squeeze the trigger, and Spray the base of the fire.
  • Fire needs oxygen. If it’s in the cab or trailer, keep the doors shut. If it’s in the engine, attempt to extinguish from the louvers, radiator, or underside of the truck.
  • If your extinguisher is empty or ineffective, try using available dirt or sand to smother the fire.

The theme for this year’s Cybersecurity Awareness Month is See Yourself in Cyber. I’m not sure boxes live in CyberSpace, but I’ll play along!

So what can we all do to safely navigate the shark-infested waters of the world of cyber?

The National Cybersecurity Alliance suggests these behaviors:

  • Enabling multi-factor authentication
  • Using strong passwords and a password manager
  • Updating software
  • Recognizing and reporting phishing

Commercial Truck Fire Safety

Any accident can be financially devastating for a company and driver, but truck fires are especially catastrophic. What may start as a small fire can easily turn into an uncontrollable inferno in minutes, engulfing both the cab and the trailer. This can lead to a loss of both the vehicle and the goods that were being hauled.

Why Do Truckers Need to Care About Cybersecurity?

Cybersecurity is a rising threat across all industries. Trucking may not seem like the most technologically advanced sector, so many truckers may feel like cybercrime isn’t a relevant risk for them.

Elections don’t change truck safety

November may change some of our elected officials. One thing the elections won’t change, though, is safety. Maintaining safety on our roadways remains a priority for both parties. The list of basics for both sides of the aisle includes: proper maintenance, safe driving practices, driver qualification, drug testing, and current credentials.
