2022 Hurricane Season in Full Swing

Wow, I just checked the list of named storms for this year and we’re already on the “D”-name (Danielle)! That means we’re off to an early start since the “C”-storm (Colin) was a month earlier than when it usually hits.

Speaking of names, it got me thinking, “was there ever a ‘Hurricane Bobby’? Nope, no ‘Bobby’. There was a ‘Hurricane Bob’ that was the first hurricane of the 1991 Atlantic Season. Ah, fame is so elusive…”

With 4 1/2 months to go in the season, NOAA is forecasting 6 to 10 hurricanes, so keep the sandbags ready, prep an emergency kit and check out the Mover’s Choice Resource Center for Hurricane Preparedness Tips!

California’s AB 5 Goes Into Effect, Leaves Questions for Carriers, Owner-Operators

The denial of U.S. Supreme Court to review CA AB-5 has led to gray area and confusion for carrier and owner operators looking for clarification for reclassification of traditional owner-employee business model. The California Trucking Association, which asked for a Supreme Court review of its 2018 lawsuit, said of the court’s decision to not hear the case: “Gasoline has been poured on the fire that is our ongoing supply chain crisis.”

2022 Study: This Is the Most Expensive Year in History To Move

And that’s due to the rising prices of goods and services that are essential for the moving industry; gasoline, used car/trucks, new trucks. With high inflation, the ever-rising gas prices, and increases in costs of trucks and labor, moving costs are also rising to unprecedented levels. The national average cost to move is hovering over $400 for first time.

Coverage Question of the Month:

Why do those pesky underwriters keep asking me for the building updates, and why are they so important?

By Terri Moran, Chief Underwriter, Mover’s Choice

As we continue to see an increase in catastrophes, there is certainly a heightened attention to the condition of the roof and roofing structures. As roofs age, there is no question they become more vulnerable to damage, to not only the roof, but also the property inside. If a roof is blown off the building and water and debris make its way in, and you as a building owner or custodian of your customers’ property knew it may have needed repair and replacement, you could be held to a much higher degree of liability for the damage to your customers’ property.

Probably just, if not more important, when we are advised of the updates and they are found to be satisfactory, the coverage we can offer is far superior. When we don’t know, or it is determined that the condition is less than average, coverage will often be limited to Actual Cash Value rather than Replacement Cost. Think about the cost to replace your roof. For some of these very large warehouses, it can easily exceed $100,000.

We have similar questions around plumbing and heating and have certainly seen substantial water damage claims where plumbing failed. In the event of plumbing failures, sometimes it is not discovered right away and customers’ property may start to mold. Mold is not a covered cause of loss except in rare certain circumstances for certain government property in storage.

It is in your best interest to take the few extra minutes to provide the detail on when you last updated the utilities and roofing of one of your primary assets, your building.

Feel free to reach out to you underwriter or me if you have any thoughts or questions.
